Biokat's | Gimborn Italia S.r.l. Società a Socio Unico

For more than 30 years, Biokat’s has been synonymous with premium cat litter and a feeling of clean comfort. Superior hygiene and a deep sense of well-being are the two central elements of our positioning. After all, Biokat’s combines two important requirements for a harmonious relationship between owners and cats: A 100% clean and odourless litter tray for the humans thanks to the litter’s fast odour-binding properties, solid clumping and high absorption capacity, and a wonderful feeling of cleanliness and comfort for the cats.
In addition to unscented cat litter, Biokat’s also comes in scented varieties from our unique world of fragrances.

Furthermore, Biokat’s is ‘Made in Germany’ meaning it is a byword for German quality and secures jobs within the country. We have implemented an award-winning sustainability concept for the manufacture of our cat litter, as we care for both the well-being of our feline friends and the well-being of the environment.

FAQ

What is bentonite?
Bentonite is a mixture of natural clay minerals and has pores that can open and close. Bentonite absorbs liquids and encloses them in the pores, thus forming clumps/agglomerates. So our bentonite-based cat litter is an agglomerating, all-natural litter.

How and where is bentonite obtained?
Bentonite is a natural clay and is usually mined at great depths, sometimes up to 30 metres below the surface of the earth. This means that it is necessary to dig deep to extract it from the quarry. In Europe, there are several areas famous for their clay-rich soils. In Germany, and especially the soil in Bavaria, bentonite is particularly rich. For Biokat's bedding, we use mainly Bavarian bentonite. Since our production plant is located in Kelheim in Bavaria, we can guarantee short and environmentally friendly supply routes.

Are there different types of bentonite? What colour should it be?
Bentonite is a natural raw material that is subject to natural irregularities. The position of the bentonite in the quarry and the climate are among the factors that can influence the absorption and colour of the clay. However, colour is not an indicator of quality, it is a purely visual factor.

What happens to clay quarries once they are exhausted?
Throughout the extraction process, geologists constantly monitor the quarries to ensure that the natural balance of the environment is preserved. After extraction, the bentonite quarries are recultivated and renaturalised. This means that the land is carefully sown with new seeds that grow into mixed forests, farmland and biotopes.recultivation aims at maintaining the new natural environment, preserving biodiversity and promoting the care of ecosystems.

Why is cleanliness and hygiene so important for cats?
In cats, a strong sense of cleanliness and hygiene is innate. By cleaning themselves intensively, they impregnate their fur against moisture and more. Cats are also very demanding with regard to litter hygiene and avoid it if it smells bad. This is the advantage of Biokat's natural clay agglomerating cat litter: it effectively retains odours in their pores, thus ensuring lasting litter hygiene.

Why doesn't my cat use the litter box (toilet/box)?
There can be many reasons if the cat refuses to use the litter box. For example, cats notice immediately if the usual litter box has been replaced with a different brand. Cats are very habit-forming animals, which do not like changes. Another reason could be that there is not enough litter in the litter tray. Cats dig when they have done their business; in nature this behaviour serves to protect the cat because it means that their enemies will not be able to detect their tracks. The cat has not lost this habit of rasping and covering, despite having become domesticated in the meantime. To encourage your cat to use the litter tray/toilet try filling it with a little more litter than usual.

How much litter should I add to the toilet/tub?
For proper use and maximum litter yield, we recommend making sure that the granules are mixed evenly when you pour them into the tray. As a rule, we recommend filling the tray with 7 cm of litter. If you have several cats using the same litter tray, the amount of litter may vary. This helps to ensure that the litter can always form compact clumps/agglomerates.

How often should I remove clumps from the litter box?
We recommend removing clods three times a day. The complete cleaning of the litter depends on a number of factors, such as how many cats use the litter and how often they use it per day.

How often should I empty the litter box completely?
As a general rule, all litter in the litter tray should be replaced every 4-6 weeks. However, your judgement also plays an important role. If you have the feeling that the litter starts to give off unpleasant odours before 4-6 weeks, you can of course replace it earlier.

How can I store the litter bag correctly?
The litter bag, being made of paper, should be stored dry, in an environment with normal humidity. Air that is too humid would make the paper more easily tear and also make the litter less effective as it will have absorbed the moisture.

How do I dispose of used cat litter?
As a general rule, cat litter should be disposed of with undifferentiated household waste or organic waste. This may vary from region to region. Make sure you follow the guidelines set by the authorities.

Is Biokat bentonite cat litter compostable?
Biokat's natural clay and bentonite litter is not compostable. Compostable' refers to organic matter that decomposes - this is not the case with bentonite. However, a maximum quantity of 25 kg/m³ of bentonite cat litter can be used to improve the compost.
Disposal of used cat litter in compost is generally not recommended. We therefore advise you to dispose of it through normal household waste or, if approved by your local authority, together with organic waste.

What is meant by the absorbency of a litter box?
This refers to the ability of a litter box to retain liquids. The higher the absorbency, the more liquids are retained.

Why does my litter make dust?
Biokat's litter is not very dusty. However, dust can be created if the packaging has been subjected to rubbing, e.g. during transport. Therefore, it is advisable not to leave the litter in the car for too long after purchase. Even if modern cars have good suspension, any movement can cause friction between the granules inside the bag. Clay is a very sensitive material. When filling the litter box, make sure you keep the bag as close to the tray as possible.

Why can't I smell my scented litter?
No scent? Absolutely not! All bentonite grains in Biokat's scented litter are individually treated in our factory. So why does the litter seem to be unscented? It is very simple and is due to a physical process: bentonite is a porous clay that can encapsulate the scent added to the litter. When the grains get wet, the pores open up again and release the scent. This means that the spring scent of Biokat's can only be fully perceived after the cat has urinated on it. In contrast, the scent is barely noticeable in new or unused litter.

Can scents such as Biokat's Classic fresh be harmful to cats?
No! Cats have a special organ, called the Jacobson's organ, which acts like a 'super nose'. Thanks to this special olfactory organ, cats are able to distinguish very precisely between smells that they find pleasant and those that they do not like. So if a cat does not like a smell, it will let you know, for example by avoiding the litter box. Biokat's tries to use only scents that are also found in nature. For example, Biokat's Classic fresh has a fresh scent of meadows and herbs while Biokat's Micro fresh smells of summer flowers.

Why does the cat drag litter all over the house?
Litter shedding depends on the individual behaviour of the cat. Because of their weight, coarse-grained litter is much less likely to be dragged out of the litter box than fine or natural fibre litter. This happens in about 90% of cases, but there are, of course, always exceptions such as:

  • Cats vigorously digging and spreading litter outside the litter box
  • Grains get stuck between the paw pads after the cat has dug into the litter box
' Long-haired cats that are brushed regularly - the grains adhere more easily to the hair due to static electricity

My cat eats the litter box! Will it hurt him?
Bentonite is a natural clay. If your cat eats bentonite litter, there could be several reasons. Cats have a very sensitive physique and if they show deficiencies they try to compensate for them: it is a natural reflex. Eating bentonite is a sign that your cat is experiencing a mineral deficiency. By supplementing its diet with minerals, e.g. in the form of additional food, you can prevent your cat from eating litter.
If the cat has only eaten a few granules and only once, this is not a problem
If, on the other hand, he has ingested a larger quantity, it is advisable to consult a vet as a precaution, as a certain amount of clay in the stomach could lead to complications.

FAQ

What are proteins and why are they important?
It is the composition of proteins that is important. Proteins are composed of amino acids - think of them as bricks - and the quantity of these amino acids is crucial. Protein in dry cat food must meet the following requirement: it must correspond to the quantity and composition of those found in food that the cat would take in naturally. Some of the amino acids that cats need are only found in animal proteins. These amino acids are important for muscles, skin, fur, blood and many other tissues, which means they are essential for your pet.

How can I prevent my cat from having hairballs (balls)?
Cats spend half their day cleaning themselves, which significantly affects the animal's well-being. As the cat's tongue has a rough surface, as the cat licks itself the hairs stick to the tongue and can therefore be swallowed. These hairs can then combine with ingredients from food, gastric juices, saliva, etc. to form hairballs of various sizes.Particularly at risk are:

  • Long-haired cats
  • Overweight cats
  • Cats with parasitic infestations
  • Elderly cats, due to their reduced intestinal motility.
For cats with "hairball/airball problems", GimCat has for many years been producing proven anti-hairball products such as GimCat Malt-Soft Extra, GimCat Anti-Hairball Pastes, GimCat Anti-Hairball Tabs.

How should I feed an older cat?
When cats get older, many things change. A good diet should be able to cope with these changes. What exactly changes?

  • Decreased sense of smell
  • Weight loss - many older cats become very thin
  • The coat loses vitality
  • Kidney function weakens
  • Cells are more likely to be attacked by metabolic toxins, also known as free radicals
  • Constipation may be more frequent because the intestines become less active
Look for the following characteristics in high-quality food for older cats:
  • High palatability and very easily digestible ingredients
  • Increased protein and fat, to prevent weight loss
  • High-quality essential fatty acids, to promote healthy skin and coat
  • Reduced phosphorus intake, to protect the kidneys
  • Increased vitamin E and C, to protect cells
Our GimCat Senior Paste with its BALANCED-AGEING FORMULA contains a complex of high-quality active ingredients that limits this particular spectrum of age-related changes and thus reduces the resulting symptoms.
The paste therefore has a positive effect on:
  • Fat metabolism and protein digestion
  • Skin and coat problems
  • Joint wear (arthrosis)

Can I give my cat a vegetarian diet?
Cats are natural carnivores. Even if you and your family follow a vegetarian diet, you should give your cat meat regularly, as it needs its specific proteins!

Why do some of your pastes contain antioxidants?
Our pastes contain high quality oils with essential unsaturated fatty acids. These oils have a naturally short shelf life because they can be affected by atmospheric oxygen. If we used more stable oils, they would contain significantly less unsaturated fatty acids.
To ensure that our pastes remain stable and do not go rancid or become unpleasantly bitter, we have to add antioxidants to them. When our products contain antioxidants, we always state this on the packaging. This allows the purchaser to decide for themselves whether the benefits of the pasta outweigh the risk of low levels of antioxidants and subsequent deterioration of the product if they were not present.
BHT (the antioxidant we use) has been approved for cats, and the authorisation procedure has deemed it suitable for the animal species 'cat'. We never use ethoxyquin as an antioxidant.

Are GimCat pastes grain-free?
Our pastries are not grain-free.

Do you use palm oil in GimCat pastes?
We do not use palm oil in our pastas.

Do GimCat pastas contain animal or vegetable oils?
We use high-quality vegetable oils and fish oils in some pastas.

How long do the pastas keep after opening?
The expiry date is printed on the box and only applies to the unopened tube. After opening, a specific shelf life cannot be guaranteed. However, according to our Quality Department, our pastas will usually keep for at least 4-5 weeks after opening if they are stored in a cool and hygienic environment. However, the indicated amount of vitamins can only be guaranteed for the original sealed product, as vitamin deterioration can be influenced by several factors.

How should GimCat pastes be stored?
Once opened, it is suggested to store them in the fridge, but to give them at room temperature.

Can I give my cat a combination of different GimCat pastes?
Yes, you can give your cat a combination of different GimCat pastes.

Do you also produce grain-free products for cats?
The following products in our GimCat range are grain-free:

  • Superfood Sticks
  • Sticks
  • Fish snacks
  • Functional Tabs (Multi-Vitamin Tabs, Skin & Coat Tabs and Denta-Tabs)
  • Tasty Tabs (Milk Bits, Mint Tips, Cheezies, Gras Bits)

What does it mean when it says on the packaging that the snacks contain animal/vegetal by-products?
Basically, the following applies: regardless of their value, all ingredients used are declared within statutory declaration groups. Thus, for example, malt, which is an important component of our anti-hairball paste, falls under the category 'by-products of vegetable origin'. The same applies to essential raw fibres.
Another example: 'meat' is declared in the group 'meat and animal by-products'. With this definition, we strictly adhere to European legislation and the German Food Regulation - as we do with all our declarations and all ingredients used. According to these regulations, animal by-products are clearly defined for meat ingredients that are not muscle attached to the skeleton (such as fillet, ribs or rump). We use high-quality animal by-products, such as lungs, liver or kidneys, which are available in every slaughterhouse. These are not slaughterhouse waste, but food components that have always been part of the cat's natural diet. Furthermore, we do not use any waste from the bread/bakery industry.
The question is whether pure muscle meat is really healthy for cats. In nature, a cat's diet would consist of mice, frogs, birds etc.. However, with these prey items, the cat would only consume a very small amount of muscle, in addition to offal, tendons, skin, eyes, brain, etc., and the cat would not be able to eat any muscle at all. It would therefore not be natural to give a cat only muscle meat as it would not provide it with the complete nourishment it needs.

Why do some of your products contain sugar and carbohydrates?
Many carbohydrates are sources and reservoirs of energy and can be digested to varying degrees. The usability of these carbohydrates differs depending on the type of animal or organism. While the monosaccharide glucose (dextrose) is the means of energy transport in the blood of vertebrates, cellulose can only be digested by ruminants, termites and fermenters in the rectum. However, carbohydrates also provide prebiotics, which promote the growth of good bacteria in the gut to eliminate pathogenic germs. If you follow our dietary guidelines, your cat will consume approximately 0.5-0.65 g of maltose per day through, for example, our cat food pastes. A commercially available premium cat food contains about 30-33% starch. According to normal feeding recommendations for this type of food, the cat would consume between 20 and 23 g of starch per day. Starch consists of D-type glucose - also called dextrose. As a result, there is approximately 35 times more glucose in the normal daily ration of a premium food than in the daily ration of a cat food.

Why is GimCat Shiny Cat a complementary food?
This product is not intended as a complete pet food as it does not contain enough trace elements and minerals. A complete cat food usually contains added vitamins and minerals.

How long does GimCat Milk Powder keep after opening the packaging?
If you use the product hygienically (i.e. scoop out the powder each time with a clean spoon and close the box immediately after use) and store it in a cool, dry place, the cat milk can be used until the expiry date printed on the packaging. We recommend a short sensory test (appearance, smell) before use.

What quantity of GimCat Milk Powder corresponds to the mentioned scoop?
One scoop corresponds to 5 g of cat milk powder.

FAQ

Do you use artificial flavourings or flavour enhancers?
No. None of our products contain artificial flavours or flavour enhancers.
If dogs like our products, it is only because of the high-quality natural ingredients they contain.

What does the term 'animal derivatives' mean in the list of ingredients?
When it comes to this designation, we adhere very strictly to the German feed regulation and the European feed law - as we do with all our claims and all ingredients used. According to these regulations, animal by-products are clearly defined for meat components that are not skeletal muscle such as fillet, ribs or rump. We use high-quality animal by-products, such as lungs, liver or kidneys, which are available in every slaughterhouse. These are not slaughterhouse waste, but parts that for predators such as dogs have always been part of their natural diet. Nowadays, these components are used as standard for raw feed/ BARF diets.
Muscle meat alone is not sufficient for a healthy, balanced diet for your dog. Dogs are carnivores that consume their prey in its entirety and also consume varying amounts of vegetables. The vitamins, minerals and trace elements contained in the innards are essential for the dog's diet. Furthermore, we do not use any waste from the bakery industry.

What does 'fish and fish derivatives' mean?
The term 'fish and fish derivatives' is an approved category designation under the declaration of raw materials of animal origin from fish, according to European food legislation. This category includes several components of fish origin. Fish contains a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, a lot of highly digestible protein and vitamin D and also has a good calcium-phosphorus ratio, which makes it extremely nutritious for dogs.

Why do you use chicken and/or turkey in your poultry products?
Why shouldn't we? We use high-quality meat meal of verifiable origin produced in Europe. We see no reason not to produce dog snacks with this raw material.

You say you use 'oils and fats'. What does that mean exactly?
We use pure vegetable oils. In our GimDog pastes these oils also contain a high percentage of linolenic acid, which has a positive influence on the condition of the skin. Animal nutritionists recommend a minimum daily intake of 50 mg linolenic acid per kg body weight.

Some of your products mention 'derivatives of plant origin'. What does this mean exactly?
These are proteins, e.g. from peas. Here, too, we strictly adhere to the requirements of the German feed regulation, although the term 'derivatives of plant origin' might confuse the consumer buying the product.

Some of your products claim to contain 'chemical additives'. What does this mean?
This includes vitamins and minerals that can be created synthetically and biologically. They are all individually listed both on our packaging and on our website.

Why do some of your products contain cereals?
Without the use of cereals as a carrier, it would not be possible to produce some of our snacks, e.g. Train&Treat. However, we try to keep the use of cereals to a minimum. The quantities we use do not cause food allergies in healthy dogs. Furthermore, none of our products have been reported to cause allergies. It is often said that cereals are bad for the dog. This is incorrect. Many types of cereals and grains, such as wheat and rice, are good sources of energy and fibre for dogs. The carbohydrates in cereals provide your dog with essential energy to keep him fit and healthy. Fibre allows the absorption of nutrients and regulates digestion. All macro nutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) are essential for a balanced and healthy diet. Cereals are some of the most important and healthy sources of carbohydrates. If your dog does not suffer from a cereal allergy, you can feed him cereal-containing products.

Why is the declaration on your products not more precisely divided?
European feed law allows pet food manufacturers to decide whether they want to declare their formulas or whether they prefer to protect their proprietary recipes by expressing individual ingredients in groups. This does not in any way exempt the manufacturer from complying with all regulations and does not give him any special rights. When declaring our products, we strictly adhere to the requirements for group designations, which are defined in the feed regulation (No. 767/2009 Art. 17 Nr. 2c). The group designation combines several raw materials into one group. The definitions and designations are regulated throughout the EU and are therefore comprehensible for everyone.

Gimbi | GIMBORN
Gimbi | Gimborn Italia S.r.l. Società a Socio Unico

Gimborn has always paid special attention to small rodents and ornamental rabbits, dedicating a special line to them under the Gimbi brand name with products that allow them to be fed correctly, practically and with all the variety of nature; the aim is to offer complete foods for a healthy, adequate diet that is also very palatable and appetising, and tasty snacks that 'pamper' their little friends without risking their health. In fact, these small animals have different needs depending on the species, and rabbits and guinea pigs in particular must respect an appropriate diet, as they are strict herbivores.
With this guiding philosophy, Gimbi offers: specific foodstuffs suitable for the various species - natural, timothy or flavoured hay, a fundamental basis for the feeding of rabbits and guinea pigs, but also a supplement for small rodents, thanks to the rich supply of raw fibre - dried herbs of various types, excellent for alternating with or accompanying the hay - a wide range of snacks, most of which are grain-free - and finally many types of bedding, fundamental for correct hygiene and care.

FAQ

I have just bought a dwarf rabbit for my daughter, who has named him 'Thaddeus'; we would like to create the ideal environment in the house for him to live as well as possible. We have provided him with a cage of a size to allow him good movement; however, I have heard conflicting opinions on the most correct bottom material to set up in the cage: what is the best solution to adopt?
Among the ideal bedding materials for the bottom of the cage are wood shavings, natural straw or pressed wheat straw. Among these, there is a new litter made of pure poplar wood, which has the characteristic of being 100% natural and biodegradable, produced using modern technology, free of additives, industrial and chemical residues, and also environmentally friendly: it has a high capacity for absorbing odours and liquids; it is suitable for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets and small rodents in general.
We have had dogs and cats in our home over the years, but never a small rodent: we have recently had a small rabbit and a guinea pig in the family: we are not very clear about what kind of food is ideal for them, and we would like to know what to do about this.
Small animals and so-called ornamental rabbits (lagomorphs) must be fed in a correct, practical manner, providing them with all the variety offered in nature; the aim is to offer complete food for a healthy, adequate, but at the same time very palatable and enjoyable diet, which includes the occasional use of tasty snacks; these small animals have different needs depending on the species, and rabbits and guinea pigs are strict herbivores. Their diet must therefore include: various types of hay (enriched with chamomile or rose petals and mint, for example), timothy hay, mountain hay, various types of snacks with or without cereals, with an adequate percentage of fibre to help the digestive system function properly. Among the specialities for rabbits and rodents there are also so-called super-premium (high-end) complete foods, sticks and drops, supplements rich in cereals and vitamins.
At the insistence of our children, we are planning to buy a hamster; we are wondering whether it is better to get just one, or two, e.g. a pair, so that they keep each other company; and where best to place the cage in the house.
Hamsters tend to be solitary animals and, especially for some species, the best solution is to place only one subject per cage: this is because cohabitation between several individuals can lead to "fights and brawls", which can cause unpleasant injuries. For the positioning of the cage (or cages) it would be ideal to be able to choose environments with constant temperature and humidity (perhaps not the bathroom or the kitchen, apart from any other considerations), in corners that are not excessively bright. If we want to sleep "soundly", we should not place it in the bedroom, given the nocturnal activity common in hamsters: think for example of the "vigorous pedalling" on the wheel...

Hygiene and grooming are important in dogs and cats: bathing and brushing are carried out normally and regularly. In the case of small rodents in general, and bunnies in particular, is there a similar approach?
For the bunny in particular, contact with humans is important, in the correct manner, from the first months of life: this is important for correct socialisation also in the future. For this reason, play, recall with reward, and other types of interaction are important. As in the case of dogs and cats, moments dedicated to hygiene, with specific reference to brushing, perhaps not bathing, can to a certain extent be part of the relationship/socialisation sphere, as well as cleaning. For this purpose there are special brushes, combs and carders specifically for rabbits, to which they are dedicated.

I have been told that bread crusts and dry bread help rabbits' and guinea pigs' teeth wear out, is this true?
Absolutely not, bread, apart from being a contraindicated food, does not file the teeth at all because as soon as they come into contact with saliva they become soft. Instead, dandelion twigs and roots are useful for this purpose.

Is hay a food that has to be dosed or can it always be available to my guinea pig or rabbit?
Hay is the only food that can be left available at all times without any risk.

Is wet grass bad for my rabbit?
Generally speaking this is an unfounded concept, but better to avoid as wet clover can cause problems.

Can I give my rabbit vegetables?
Absolutely yes, but be careful that it is never at fridge temperature.

My rabbit occasionally gets a red eye, what should I do?
The phenomenon is usually produced by dust, at first it is fine to clean with 5% boric water, if it does not improve within three days a veterinary visit is suggested.

My rabbit stamps its feet on the ground, is this normal?
Yes it is very normal, it is part of his habitual behaviour and can have various sources, but none of them pathological.

Should rabbits and guinea pigs be sheared?
No, periodic brushing and removal of hair knots is necessary. Light shearing can only be done in angora breeds, both rabbits and guinea pigs.

Can I give my hamster sweets as a treat?
Absolutely not, no matter how much they like them they can get stuck in their cheek sacs.

Can I give my chinchilla plant clippings?
Certainly yes, but first make sure they are not poisonous; it is best to avoid hedge plants.

Sustainability is a top priority for all our brands and something we are proud of!
For example, much of our Biokat's cat litter is made from clay, a natural raw material extracted from quarries in Bavaria and processed and packaged less than 100 km away in our factory. This is substantiated by the 'Made in Germany' label. The areas worked for clay extraction are then recultivated and, after a few years, converted into beautiful green areas where native animals and plants can thrive.
For our commitment to sustainability, we received the German Award for Excellence.
We know how precious our environment is and the responsibility each of us has towards it. To further demonstrate our special commitment to the environment, we have introduced an energy management system according to DIN EN ISO 50.001, certified by DEKRA Certification GmbH since 2015.
Finally, we have also instituted a bicycle rental programme for our staff. After all, the Lower Rhine region is a beautiful place to discover by bicycle!

In 1855, the company H. von Gimborn was founded as a chemical-pharmaceutical factory by pharmacist Heinrich von Gimborn. Initially, the company focused on the production of pastes and tablets for human consumption - similar to today's animal products.
Since 1965, when we created the first lactose-reduced milk for raising kittens, we have been producing our products at our factory in Emmerich am Rhein, in the Lower Rhine region, right on the Dutch border. Over time, we expanded our focus to dogs and our GimDog brand entered the pet snack sector together with GimCat.
Since 1997, we have used our very long experience and knowledge of cats to close the circle by creating cat litter based on betonite: a natural clay found in Bavaria. Most of Biokat's brand cat litter has been produced in our Kelheim factory ever since.
